WISHING ALL COLD END READERS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS

The festive period for football fans is usually one of the best times of the year with games coming thick and fast over Christmas and New Year. However, with the freezing weather as it is, there is a chance no games will go ahead in the Ryman League Division One (North) on Monday. Lets all hope the thaw takes place over Saturday and Sunday and some of the big local derby games get the go ahead.

Christmas is also time to reflect so there is no time like the present than to look back over how far Enfield Town has come since formation during the supporters meeting in June 2001. The club's first competitive game was just under two months later on the 18th August 2001 when the team took to the field at Gardiners Close to take on Basildon United in the Essex Senior League.  It was fitting we returned to that stadium in the Essex Senior League Cup Final at the end of our first season when we famously beat big rivals Leyton FC on penalty kicks. My overriding memory of that match was nervously not being able to look when the final penalty was taken and then glancing along at the mass ranks of Town fans with a large number of them doing the same as I was.

The cold end would like to thank all of those people who have made OUR club happen from the members of the board, to the coaching staff and players, and the people behind the scenes who carry out so much hard work and so often get overlooked.

Above - The programme for Enfield Town's first competitive fixture
In just nine and an half seasons the club has developed from playing on a railed off pitch to some time next season (if all goes to plan) moving into the re-developed Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

When fans moan and whinge about the team losing or not doing well they should stop and look back on how far the club has come in just under a decade. The fact we have a team to support that will have it's own ground in the borough for all the community to use is far better than the grim situation football in Enfield found itself in when the bulldozers moved in and so sadly demolished the hallowed Southbury Road at the end of 1999.

Whoever you support The Cold End wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
