THE COLD END RYMAN DIVISION ONE (NORTH) REVIEW OF THE SEASON - PART 5

Leyton - 21st place

One story will dominate Leyton's season, which was the imprisonment of their ex-chairman Costas Sophocleous for eight years, after he was found guilty of fraud offences. This story is well known and covered in detail elsewhere on the web, more information can be found at the following links-

The cold end likes to concentrate on football, so on the pitch Leyton had a torrid season winning only five games all away from home. They had to wait an incredible 24 games between wins after their shock 1-2 victory at Concord Rangers on the 24th October 2009 and the 0-1 result which got them a welcome three points at Potters Bar Town on the 3rd April 2010.

It was somewhat of a managerial merry-go-round in E10 with Tony Levoli in the hot-seat at the beginning of the season who left in September to be replaced by Craig Edwards who only had a short stay at Lea Bridge Road as he left in November to be replaced by Ivan Persaud who left to be replaced by Malcolm Dannie. Dannie is assisted by Wilson Frimpong who joined the club from Ashford Town (Middlesex) where he was Reserve Team manager. A host of signings were made following Dannie and Frimpong's arrival. Sadly for them they couldn't steer their new club away from the relegation zone even with a run of five draws to finish the season off with.

Best result - The 0-1 win at Potters Bar on the 3rd April to end their terrible run without a win.
Worst result - Lost to local rival's Ilford 0-1 at home on the 24th November.

Best player - Charlie Hamsher (ex of AFC Wimbledon) arrived at Lea Bridge Road late in the season only making his debut in the above Potters Bar game but ended up top scorer with 4 goals in 6 games.

Harlow Town - 22nd place

With financial problems, points being deducted and bottom of the league facing relegation to the Essex Senior League the Hawks loyal band of supporters still sang loudly throughout the season. Without doubt one of the best groups of supporters in the Ryman League - the ESL won't know whats hit it next season.

Anthony Anstead was tasked with building a squad in only a few short weeks after Glen Alzapiedi left in pre-season following the resignation of Chairman Simon Morgan. Anstead's first game in charge couldn't of been better recording a 4-2 home win against Great Wakering Rovers with James Edgerley (later to play for Wingate and Finchley) bagging himself a hat-trick. The Hawks then only won one more game until the end of the November when Anstead was replacing by club legend Marvin Samuel. Samuel's reign lasted until early March with only one victory during his time in the hot-seat.

During Samuel's time at Barrows Farm ex Manager Tommy Cunningham along with his business partner John Barnett had taken over the running of the troubled club.

Cunningham took over from Samuel as caretaker boss with well known Hawk's player Kevin Warren as his assistant. A further change was made for the last four games of the season when Warren was given overall control of the team.

March was a good month for the Hawks with a 1-2 win away at VCD Athletic, a 0-3 win at Redbridge and a 0-3 win at relegation rivals Leyton giving some hope but in the end relegation was confirmed after a terrible season the pitch and an eventful one off the pitch.

Pending the impending announcement of league constitutions it looks as though Harlow Town will be members of the Essex Senior League for next season. A new manager has yet to be appointed with Warrens name in the hat amongst others. It's certain to be another eventful season for 2010/11 with all the ESL sides wanting to put one over on the Hawks if they do join. Whoever is appointed manager will certainly know it won't be an easy ride with a certain newly merged side due to play at Goldsdown Road likely to be one of their big rivals.

Best result - 4-2 at home in the first game of the season and it all looked good for the Hawks.
Worst result - Concord's 0-7 win at Barrows Farm at the end of September.

Best player - Pacey right-winger Reece Dobson was very impressive in the game at Goldsdown Road in early February.
