WEALDSTONE AND LOWESTOFT TOWN - THE PROMOTED SIDES

Wealdstone and Lowestoft Town were both promoted from the Ryman Premier Division last season to what was expected to be the Conference South division. However, The Trawlerboys have been placed in the Conference North for the 2014/15 season and will travel to Barrow (round trip of 650+ miles) and AFC Fylde (around 520ish miles) amongst other places - A little different to Bognor Regis Town (approx 380 mile round trip) and Margate (roughly 340 miles) from last season.

The bookmakers rate The Stones between 16/1 to as high at 28/1 for the title with a Championship season at Crown Meadow an outside bet at between 50/1 and 100/1. 

The Stones open their season with a home game against Eastbourne Borough and then face a midweek trip to Bishops Stortford before a Saturday journey down to FA Trophy finalist's Gosport Borough. On Saturday 13th and Tuesday 16th September they travel to the two promoted sides from 2012/13 when they go to Concord Rangers and Whitehawk.

Lowestoft Town travel to Evo-Stik Premier Division champion's Chorley on the opening day of the season before welcoming Solihull Moors and AFC Fylde to Crown Meadow.

If you look at how the promoted sides from the Ryman League have performed over the past three seasons it shows the gap between Step 2 and Step 3 on the non-league ladder is a big one - I think the fans of both sides will be pleased with a comfortable mid-table finish around the average of 13th place for the 2014/15 season.  

WITHAM TOWN TOO GOOD FOR HERTFORD TOWN

RYMAN PREMIER SIDE SCORE SEVEN AT HERTINGFORDBURY PARK 

Witham Town ran out convincing 0-7 winners in a pre-season friendly against Hertford Town yesterday evening. In 2011/12 the two sides were playing at the same level of the non-league game in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and Essex Senior League but following two promotions Witham Town will be proud members of the Ryman Premier Division for the forthcoming season.

Witham were the better side throughout the game with the score a comfortable 0-2 at half-time through a penalty kick and a well taken goal following a swift break down the left hand side. The penalty incident could of seen the Hertford keeper sent off in a league game as it was a foul which denied a clear goal scoring opportunity.

In the second half Hertford struggled to cope with Witham's movement up front and on the wings with the Essex side running in a further five goals. The video below shows Witham's first two goals and the penalty incident along with one of Hertford's best chances by Leigh Rose in the second half.

BARNET SUNDAY LEAGUE 2014/15

The Barnet Sunday League constitution for 2014/15 has been announced with the league running four divisions which now also covers parts of North London following the merger with the North London Sunday League in the summer of 2013.

The Premier Division increases from seven to ten teams. "Inter Trac" the Premier Division champions have left the league but Borehamwood 2000 are still members having been pipped to the title by just one point in 2013/14.  Northumberland Park Rangers, who only managed two draws from their twelve games last season, are still in the Premier Division and will hopefully win a game this season which will be good to see.

In Division Two Highgate Albion 3rds will play a local derby game versus Hornsey and Highgate. The 3rds played 14 league games last season and lost them all scoring just 12 goals and letting in 67.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION NEWS

There is just under two weeks to go until the eagerly anticipated kick off to the Ryman League season on Saturday 9th August. Here the cold end looks at how the pre-season campaign and build up has been going for the teams.

AFC HORNCHURCH travelled to Division One (North) side Thurrock on Saturday and came away with a 1-2 win thanks to goals from Martin Tuohy and Junior Luke. Junior Dadson has joined from Harlow Town along with Tom Davis from Chelmsford City and goalkeeper Sam Mott who impressed for Thamesmead Town in the Premier Division last year. The Urchins will miss the goals of Stefan Payne who has joined Conference Premier side Dover Athletic. They have also drawn against a West Ham XI 2-2, Won at Whitstable Town and lost 1-0 at Bishops Stortford.

BILLERICAY TOWN have retained the services of centre-forward Ricky Sappleton who was top scorer last season with manager Craig Edwards making a number of impressive signings. Young right back Greg O'Hanlon has joined and he counts Arsenal, Charlton Athletic and Stevenage among his former clubs. Jack Edwards has also signed and he was was former youth team captain at Southend United from where he was released over the summer. Defender/Midfielder Matt Pooley also looks a good signing for the blues. He has spent time with Braintree Town and league two side's Gillingham and Dagenham & Redbridge. Goalkeeper Marko Cancar and Swiss born midfielder Cyrus Mahler has also joined the blues squad. On Saturday in front of 264 people the blues lost to Millwall u21's 1-2 with Junior Appiah scoring their goal. Other results have seen them draw 0-0 at home to Conference new boy's Eastleigh, a 4-3 win over Hemel Hempsted Town, a 1-3 home defeat versus Southend United and a 1-7 away win over Basildon United. Ex Towner Chris Wild did re-join for the 2014/15 but has since left New Lodge.

BOGNOR REGIS TOWN have lost last season's captain KaneWills who has joined the Margate promotion push which will be a big loss for The Rocks. They have two fixtures this week with a trip to Worthing tonight (Monday) and Conference South Whitehawk visiting Nyewood Lane on Wednesday. So far they have lost at home against a Stoke City XI (1-2), Portsmouth (1-6 in front of over 2,000 people) and Reading 0-2. An experimental side drew 1-1 at AFC Portchester last Friday night. Manager Jamie Howell still has the bulk of last season's squad which made the play-offs so they should be there or thereabouts in the top five at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

At BURY TOWN it's a new era as Ben Chenery takes over at manager following long serving boss Richard Wilkins leaving the club towards the end of last season. Chenery had been Wilkin's assistant for two years so knows Ram Meadow very well. Can they improve on last season's fifteenth place position? It's been a mixed bag of results so far in pre-season with wins against Gorleston (3-0), Walsham-Le-Willows (4-1) and Mildenhall Town (2-0) and defeats versus AFC Sudbury (2-1) and Colchester United (0-4). Liam Wales (2) and Ross Bailey (2), two products of the club's youth team, have been amongst the goals so far this pre-season.

CANVEY ISLAND played their local rival's Concord Rangers on Saturday with the Conference South side coming out 3-2 winners. This was less than 24 hours after The Gulls had won 1-0 against a Gillingham XI. They have also drawn 2-2 at Heybridge Swifts, lost 2-0 at Chelmsford City, drawn 1-1 at home to Burnham Ramblers and lost 1-4 at home to Conference Premier new boy's Dover Athletic. Centre-Forward John Sands has been scoring frequently in the pre-season games having joined from Bury Town last October ands scoring 13 times in 22 games. He should do well this season having suffered a nasty injury in a broken jaw for part of the last campaign.  Anthony Thomas who scored 17 goals for Hendon last season and joined Canvey in June scored twice in the Island derby. Some great news for the club is that young goalkeeper Josh Vickers who spent most of last season on loan from Arsenal has signed a professional contract at The Emirates for the forthcoming season. He played forty times last season for The Gulls in 2013/14. As well as Anthony Thomas joining the club have also recruited left winger/midfielder Victor Osobo from Harrow Borough and Freddie Warren who had been released by Conference side Barnet. Warren, a central midfielder, played on loan at The Prospects Stadium during the 2013/14 campaign. Manager Danny Heale has also made the signing of experienced centre back John Easterford who has moved the short distance from Concord. He is no stranger to the club having played 88 times between 2010 to 2012.

Some of the focus for DULWICH HAMLET has been off the pitch as the potential redevelopment of their Champion Hill ground has been announced. The club are now owned by the Hadley Property Group who took over over in early 2014 and wiped out a considerable amount of debt the club had. Manager Gavin Rose has lost a number of players from last season's successful squad including the magic of midfielder Erhun Oztumer who has joined League One side Peterborough United. Hamlet host Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening which should attract a decent crowd to Champion Hill. A young side from Dulwich had a 1-4 victory at the weekend at Division One (South) new boy's Whyteleafe and also another 1-4 victory at Beckenham Town. Xavier Vidal, Ashley Robinson (2) and Ashley Carew scored the goals against The Leafe. Youngster Kareem Boyle has impressed in pre-season and looks like another player who is going to make the step up from the Aspire Academy/Hamlet youth team. Keep a look out for him in 2014/15!

EAST THURROCK UNITED's long serving manager John Coventry has announced the following players have joined for the 2014/15 campaign - David Hughes, Ryan Sammons, Simon Peddie, Steve Sheehan, Tom Stephen, Connor Witherspoon, Nicky Symons, Mitchell Gilbey, Ross Parmenter, Sam Letchmere, Neil Richmonds, David Bryan, Emmanuel Osei and Lewis Smith. The Rocks hosted Luton Town last mid-week in a game which saw goal keeper Elliot Justham return to Rookery Hill. The game ended 1-1. They have also beat Redbridge 3-1 this pre-season. Former Aveley centre-back Jay Leader had been set to join United but as stated in this article he joined local rival's Grays Athletic. 

ENFIELD TOWN's scheduled home friendly against Boreham Wood tomorrow has been cancelled as the pitch at Donkey Lane isn't quite ready to be played on. Most of the club's fans enjoyed a wonderful weekend trip to Belgium where they recorded a 0-4 victory over friends and fellow fan's formed club YB SK Beveren. George Borg has moved to replace the currently injured Noel Imber by recruiting Nathan McDonald on loan from Conference Premier Braintree Town. He made his debut for The Towners in Belgium. 

GRAYS ATHELTIC are under the new management of Jody Brown who has joined after a decent season with Division One (North) Heybridge Swifts. The club have signed a number of impressive players with Brown who has also spent time at Halstead Town, Redbridge and Maldon and Tiptree building what looks a good squad. Athletic will continue ground sharing at Aveley for the 2014/15 campaign. Jay Leader (see East Thurrock United), former Enfield Town fan's favourite Jey Siva (from Wealdstone), centre forward Chris Bryan (Heybridge Swifts), 6' 7" inch keeper Conor Gough (Bristol Rovers) and young striker Dumebi Dumaka (Heybridge Swifts and also played for Barking) have all joined Brown's new look squad. The most impressive signing has to be Glenn Little who has joined from Ryman Premier champion's Wealdstone. His experience will prove invaluable to the Essex side. It's been a good pre-season so far with five wins and two defeats in the seven games played so far. The wins have been against Waltham Abbey (2-1), Brentwood Town (2-1), Bedfont and Feltham (6-0), Chatham Town (1-0) and Romford (2-0) with the defeats against Chelmsford City (5-1) and Aveley (2-1). Tomorrow night see's Grays make the trip to local rivals Tilbury for The Stan Veness Trophy which should be a entertaining game. 

HAMPTON AND RICHMOND'S most important business for the summer was keeping hold of prolific striker Charlie Moone who had been attracting club's from higher up the non-league ladder. Midfielder's Tom Hickey and Joe Turner have both left The Beveree to join Wealdstone's maiden season in the conference south and have been replaced by Michael Bryan (from Hendon) and 20 year old Jesse Kewley-Graham (Wycombe Wanderers) have both joined the club along with left winger Jerome Federico who makes the step up from Calor League Central side Northwood. The 22 year old made some impressive performances for Wood last year and looks a really decent signing for joint manager's Paul Barry and Darren Powell. There is no doubt in The Cold End's mind that with the quality of the squad at H&R they will improve greatly on last season's twelfth place finish. 269 people saw a Crystal Palace XI win 2-3 against Hampton on Saturday. 

Dave Anderson who guided HARROW BOROUGH to a comfortable eighteenth position last season will be looking to move up the table for the 2014/15 season. It was great to see goalkeeper James Shea who impressed last season join League Two side AFC Wimbledon recently. Borough had a great day on Saturday as a young Arsenal XI visited Earlsmead and attracted a good crowd of 500 people. The Gunners ran out 1-5 winners but the event would of boosted the club accounts for the forthcoming campaign. Anderson has added forward Lewis Driver (from Burnham) to his squad - the majority of which have stayed which will hopefully for the Borough fans will mean stability means success. 

HENDON boss Gary McCann has been in charge of the club since February 2005 so 14/15 will be ninth full season with the North London club who continue to ground share at Harrow Borough's Earlsmead. McCann has added Sam Murphy (formerly of Aldershot Town), Portuguese midfielder Andrea Da Costa (formerly of Kingstonian, Bishop's Stortford, Macclesfield Town and AFC Bournemouth), winger Tom O'Regan (Beaconsfield SYCOB) and the very experienced striker Kezie Ibe (who was at Conference South side Basingstoke Town last season) to his squad. Pre season has seen three wins, one draw and one defeat so far. 

KINGSTONIAN will miss the services of forward Ryan Moss who has joined Margate. The K's are under new management of former Carshalton Athletic boss Tommy Williams who has moved to replace Moss with Elvis Hammond (ex of Woking, Farnborough, Cheltenham Town and Leicester City) and Nathaniel Pinney who has joined from Tonbridge Angels. He scored many goals for Williams when in charge of Carshalton Atlhetic in 2012/13. They will play alongside Andre McCollin who is rated by many people as one of the best players in the Ryman Premier Division. Can Williams go one better than the runners-up position the K's finished last season? They face Conference Premier side Braintree Town tonight at Kingsmeadow. 

LEATHERHEAD, promoted via the Division One (South) play-offs, rejoin the Premier Division after just two seasons. The Tanners have signed centre-back Joe Bruce who was with Calor Division One Central winner's Dunstable Town last season but have lost striker Tom Bradbrook to Conference Premier Dartford, Tom Parkinson to Tonbridge Angels and Jamie Coyle to Maidstone United. Central defender Jerry Nnamani, who was with Crystal Palace as a youth team player, is a player to look out for. The club have signed centre forward Kiernan Hughes-Mason who played a few games for Maidstone United last season and has also played for Kettering Town, Grimbsy Town and Welling United amongst other clubs. The 22 year old, born in Hackney, was with both Arsenal, Millwall and Tottenham Hotspur as a youth team player. Manager Richard Brady and fans at Fetcham Grove will probably be happy with a mid-table position next season.

LEISTON were very impressive when the cold end saw them play Enfield Town in March. They recorded an impressive 1-3 win at Donkey Lane thanks to two goals from Gareth Heath and Connor Hubble (who was on loan from Colchester United). Under manager Steve Ball, who took over the Victory Road hot-seat in November 2013, the teams form improved remarkably and finished impressively in ninth place. Ball had made some good signings to improve his squad - Defender Scott Mitchell has moved from AFC Sudbury and Tom Bullard from Bury Town where he was captain for many seasons along with the experienced Cliff Akurang from Conference South side Bishops Sotrtford. The key piece of recruitment made by the club looks to be the appointment of a Richard Wilkins as Assistant Manger. He left Bury Town towards the end of the last season and brings with him a wealth of knowledge about the game as he was manager for 14 years at Ram Meadow. The Cold End predicts Leiston. currently rated as high at 33/1 for the title by some bookmakers, will be the surprise team of the division and could well finish in the top five.

Boss Gary Wilson and Assistant Danny Bloor will be looking to improve on LEWES last two finishing positions of 16th and 19th following a 6th place finish in 2011/12. They have recruited George Branford who was released by Portsmouth over the summer. He spent some time on loan at The Dripping Pan last season so knows the club well. Centre-Forward Elliott Romain has also joined after scoring regularly for Three Bridges FC for the last four seasons. The Rooks face a Charlton Athletic XI at home tomorrow night.

MAIDSTONE UNITED, who missed out on the play-offs last season finishing seventh after featuring in the top five for most of the campaign, are likely to be right up the top of the division again. They will miss 24 goal Zac Attwood who has joined the revolution at Margate. Boss Jay Saunders has signed Jay May from Bromley to boost his striking options along with Jamie Coyle from Leatherhead (mentioned above).

MARGATE are the hot favourites for the title after signing a number of big name players. Attwood (mentioned above), Jason Prior (who scored bundles of goals for Bognor Regis Town a few seasons ago to secure a move to League Two side AFC Wimbledon), Ryan Moss from Kingstonian are a few of the signings made. Manager Terry Brown and Assistant Stuart Cash are highly experienced and there is no doubting why they are rated so highly by everyone. The Gate recorded a 5-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers XI on Saturday thanks to goals from Prior, Attwood, Moss, Lewis Taylor and goal scoring midfielder Charlie Allen. Barnet visit Hartsdown Park tomorrow night.

METROPOLITAN POLICE manager Jim Cooper has retained most of last season's squad but has recruited Mitchell Gutteridge, Ryan Watts, Billy Crook (a headline writer's dream - "CROOK NICKS IT FOR THE POLICE") and Michael Charles. It's been three wins and from three games so far this pre-season including a 5-2 victory over Merstham on Saturday.

Division One (South) PEACEHAVEN AND TELSCOMBE are fancied by many to do quite well in the Premier Division this season. They will miss the goals of 24 year old Charlie Walker who has this week joined League Two side Luton Town. Walker netted 43 goals for The Magpies last season Walker has started his football career in the Sussex County League for Shoreham and Lancing before joining Whitehawk and then Peacehaven. He is another example that if clubs are willing to take a small gamble they could unearth a real gem - Look at Charlie Austin who just five seasons ago was with Poole Town and will be playing the Premier League with Queens Park Rangers next season. The signing of ex Whitehawk player Sami El Abd will provide much needed experience for the team.

TONBRIDGE ANGELS, relegated from the Conference South, are under new management of Steve McKimm who has promoted a few young players from the reserve side and made a few new signings. The Cold End thinks the Angels will be happy with a mid-table position next season and will look to build a new team over a few season capable of promotion back to Step two of the non-league ladder. It looks like the club will not break the bank to achieve this though so it will be a transitional/consolidation type of season for the Angels in the cold end's opinion.

Division One (North) surprise champions VCD ATHLETIC will be playing at Step three of the non-league ladder for the first time in their history. Tony Russell's side has won three and drawn one of their pre-season games so far and entertain Dartford in a local derby tomorrow evening at Oakwood which should draw a decent crowd.

WINGATE AND FINCHLEY reprieved from relegation to Division One (North) following Worksop Town's resignation from the Northern Premier League will start their fourth season at this level of football. They certainly won't finish in the top five (even the most ardent of supporters will tell you this) but I predict the club with 'more flags than fans' will surprise a few teams this season.

WITHAM TOWN, promoted via the Division One (North) play-offs are managed by Garry Kimble who has recruited a number of players ready for the Premier Division campaign. Striker Josh Mayhew who scored over 20+ goals for Hadleigh United in the Thurlow Nunn League last season has joined along with Leon Antoine (from Harlow Town), midfielder Ryan Blackman (from Tilbury) and James Robinson (with Billericay Town last season). Young striker Shamido Pedulu who started in the reserve side last season is a player to watch for at Spa Road. My thoughts are with everyone at the Essex club after their chairman Tony Last sadly died recently. He was well respected in local football and had done so much for the club. No one would of been prouder to see Town playing in the Ryman Premier Division than him.

It's shaping up to be a really exciting season and with more supporters watching games at this level creating great atmospheres there has never been a better time in my opinion to watch your local side.

TEAM SPIRIT - THE FLYING EAGLES HUDDLE BEFORE KICK OFF

"HARRY SEDGLEY STEPS DOWN AT PENALTY TAKER" 

The London Colney twitter feed (@LCFC1907) tweeted 'breaking news...Harry Sedgley steps down as penalty taker' after Tuesday night's victory over The Flying Eagles of Ealing Town at Cotlandswick. I'm sure this was just a bit of banter after the Colney player missed the penalty kick he took right at the end of an entertaining well contested pre-season friendly game. 

The home side could of been more than 2-0 up by this point as they had a number of good chances to score against the new Division Two side Ealing Town who made a good fight of things and will take many positives from this game against an established Premier Division side in the Spartan South Midlands League. Ealing hit the post and forced the home keeper into making a great save in the first half. The match highlights are below including both goals scored - Colney's first was adjudged to have crossed the line although from the angle filmed it's impossible to tell. The home side changed most of their team and kits in the second half from gold to sky blue and white striped shirts.

London Colney's first league fixtures are a home fixture versus Tring Athletic followed by a Tuesday night trip to Kings Langley. They then have a home FA Cup game versus Woodbridge Town on Saturday 16th August. Before these they entertain Hoddesdon Town on Tuesday 5th August in the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield. They also have a home pre-season game against Northwood this Saturday. 

Ealing Town's first league game is scheduled for Saturday 16th August when they make the trip to Wolverton Town before welcoming Aston Clinton to Avenue Park on Saturday 23rd August. They have three pre-season games left at Hatfield Town (Thursday 31st July), home versus Edgware Town (Saturday 2nd August) and a trip to Clapton on Tuesday 5th August. 

Good luck to both teams for the 2014/15 season. 

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE FIXTURES RELEASED

The forty-fourth season of the Essex Senior League kicks off on Saturday 9th August with all twenty clubs in action. There are some really good games in prospect with last season's runner's up Haringey Borough welcoming Clapton to Coles Park and fourth placed Tower Hamlets making the trip to Bowers and Pitsea who are under the new management of Rob Small who has joined from Essex Olympian League side Southminster St Leonards where he won the championship last season. There are also two East London derby games as Ilford welcome former tenant's Waltham Forest to Cricklefield Stadium and Sporting Bengal United welcoming old rival's under a new name in Newham FC. London Bari who finished bottom in 2013/14 winning only three of thirty-eight games welcome Greenhouse London who finished in eighteenth place winning six of their thirty-eight games. Enfield 1893 FC will be playing their home league games at Harlow Town's stadium and welcome both Stansted and Greenhouse London in the opening week of the season.

In the FA Cup there is only one all Essex Senior League game as Clapton play Bowers and Pitsea. FC Romania make a little piece of history as they make their debut in the competition with a home tie against Haverhill Rovers. Barking make the reverse trip to Suffolk to face Haverhill Borough. There is a game on Sunday which could attract a good amount of ground hoppers when Stansted play Ipswich Wanderers at Bishop's Stortford's ProKit Stadium.

HALF A DECADE OF THE COLD END

This week marks The Cold End's fifth birthday so as is customary I'd like to thank Mrs Cold End for putting up with my interest in (she'd call it an obsession!) non-league football. Also a big thank you to all who read the website putting up with my regular spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Thank you to everyone who sends me feedback especially on the match highlights I produce through the season. Your comments are very much appreciated and make it all worth while to me. Please take note I don't make any money from The Cold End - I'm proud it's independent (although I do support Enfield Town FC) and advert free - it's purely a labour of love that promotes local non-league football that I hope you enjoy reading.

Below are highlights of the two of the best matches I've seen over the past year. If your new to non-league football please take a look and hopefully visit a local club - you be made most welcome.

Saturday 9th November saw Knebworth face Letchworth Garden City Eagles in the Hertfordshire Senior County League Premier Division which turned out to be a seven goal thriller -


Still in November on Saturday 23rd Dulwich Hamlet visited Enfield Town (under caretaker manager Bryan Hammatt) and the Town fans were mesmerised by the performance of highly rated Hamlet attacking midfielder Erhun Oztumer who was quite simply outstanding for the away side. I wrote after the game 'Erhun Oztumer will play in the football league sooner rather than later. He was the best player I've seen in the Ryman Premier Division for a long while' and it was no surprise when he moved to League One side Peterborough United this summer. We'll all be looking out for Oztumer on the football league show this season.

East Grinstead Town and South Park both make their Ryman League debuts this season.

The newly promoted teams are South Park (who finished run away champions of the Combined Counties League with a points total of 104 to runner's up Camberley Town on 90 pts) and East Grinstead Town (second placed in the Sussex County League Division One with 79 points to champions East Preston on 96 points who were not promoted). South Park only joined the Combined Counties League in 2006 when they moved up from the now defunct Crawley and District League. The Wasps were founder members of the Sussex County League back in 1920/21 and aside from the periods of 1922 to 1924 and 1926 to 1937 have been competing in the league every season and have never been champions of the top division.

THE SWIFTS AND THE HAWKS HEAD THE BETTING IN RYMAN DIVISION ONE (NORTH)

Betvictor and Betway are offering odds for the 2014/15 Ryman Division One (North) title with Heybridge Swifts rated as favourites at 5/1 and 9/2 respectively. Next comes play-off runner's up Harlow Town at 6/1 and 7/1 followed by AFC Sudbury and Thurrock at either 7/1 or 8/1. The outsiders are Waltham Abbey (40/1 or 50/1) and Wroxham at 50/1 and 60/1.

Newly promoted sides Brightlingsea Regent and Great Wakering Rovers are both rated at 25/1 with relegated Thamesmead Town at 14/1 and Cray Wanderers at 25/1.

 Brightlingsea Regent make their Step four debut at Chadfields where they will be welcomed by the noisy Docker's fans. 

Brightlingsea Regent make their debut at Step 4 of the non-league ladder at Chadfields where they take on Tilbury. Regent were formed in 2005 following a merger between Brightlingsea United and local youth team Regent Park Rovers. Former Essex Senior League champion's United has fallen into the Essex and Suffolk Border League in 2003 after resigning from the Eastern Counties League. Since 2005 the club had had five promotions and have signed some decent players to add to their already strong squad that finished second in the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division last season.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION BETTING FOR 2014/15

Three bookmakers have released odds for the Ryman Premier Division 2014/15 campaign. Betvictor, Bet365.com and betway are all involved and unsurprisingly make Margate (who have signed a number of decent players) very warm favourites at either 11/8, 3/1 or 5/2. I'm sure Wingate and Finchley will revel with their "underdog tag" and cause a few teams a shock as they are rated at 100/1 with bet.365 with the other two firms rating them at 40/1 and 50/1. Enfield Town are rated at 50/1.

TONY LAMACRAFT

My thoughts are with the family and friends of Tony Lamacraft who tragically died after the Stotfold v AFC Kempston Rovers game on Saturday afternoon. Tony, who was just 51, had been appointed first team coach at Stotfold in 2013. He was well known and highly respected in local football having also been at Langford FC and Knebworth FC in previous years. Reading the multitude of tributes on twitter shows he was very passionate about the game at all levels and his tragic passing will be a great loss to the game. 

My condolences to his family, friends and all at Stotfold Football Club who made Enfield Town fans so welcome in the FA Cup game back in 2011. 

WADERS HOLD ON TO WIN THE BIGGLESWADE DERBY

Biggleswade United welcomed their neighbour's Biggleswade Town to Second Meadow for a testimonial game to celebrate Martin Russell's ten year career with United. Russell has been an amazing player for the home side - he has made 336 appearances and scored 33 goals since making his debut in 2004.

All proceeds from the game went towards the very good cause of the Bedford neo-natal unit.

Rewind to 2006 and footballing map in the Bedfordshire town was slightly different as The Wader's left their Fairfield Road ground and began ground-sharing at Bedford United's McMullen Park. They finished 18th of 21 clubs in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division with United in 14th place. Town's move into their new Carlsberg Stadium in 2008 coincided with a championship season and promotion to the then Southern League Divison One (Midlands) for the 2009/10 season. A further promotion via the play-offs in 2012/13 means they now ply their trade in the Calor League Premier Division (step 3 of the non-league ladder). United have stayed in the lower reaches of the SSMFL Premier but have developed their Second Meadow home into a decent stadium for Step 5 level.

How far Town have come is indicated in comparing their average league attendance in 2006/07 which was 35 when ground sharing to last season's of 198.

The home goalkeeper made some terrific saves especially in the second half 

Yesterday on a very humid afternoon they raced into a 0-3 lead early in the first half and had chances to make the game safe when 1-3 in the second half with the United keeper making some great saves. The home side made it 2-3 and had a great chance to make it 3-3 only for a last ditch block on the line in the final moments of the game.

LANDLORDS V TENANTS ENDS ALL SQUARE

It was a Landlords v Tenants pre-season derby at Top Field on Saturday as Calor League Premier Division side Hitchin Town played Spartan South Midlands League Division One side Baldock Town.

Fresh from a Thursday evening 0-5 home defeat (in front of 1,454 people) against neighbour's and football league newcomer's Luton Town The Canaries played a number of trialists in the three periods of 30 minutes played with a substantially smaller crowd watching. Well done to Hitchin for charging a bargain £1 entrance fee for this game which kicked off at Noon.

Baldock scored first via a shot from outside of the box by Jack Gregson after six minutes with Hitchin scoring via a Shaun Okojie far post header from a corner in the eighth minute. The match was played in very hot and humid conditions with both teams using roll on/off substitutions. Footage of Okojie's goal is below -

HAWKS EDGE TOWNERS IN PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY

There was a brilliant atmosphere at the pre-season friendly game played between Harlow Town and Enfield Town last night. Both sets of fans in the 157 crowd (decent figure for a PSF!) made lots of noise especially in the second half when both mixed together in The Jack Chapman Stand trading songs and banter.

Harlow Town's Eadie, Read and Smith will cause many of the Division One (North) teams trouble this season 

Harlow started the better of the teams and were 2-0 up inside twenty minutes via Alex 'The Machine' Read (see video below) and James Smith. The Hawk's front line of Read (in the centre), Layne Eadie (left) and George Smith (right) gave the Town back four a decent work out for the first half an hour or so as the home side were on top of things.

Atmosphere - The two Towns mix together around the new ETFC flag in the second half.

The visitors replied via Jamie Richards on 37 minutes. There could of been more goals as Harlow keeper Ed Thompson made a fantastic save prior to Richo scoring for Enfield and the home side's cross bar was rattled in the second half. Harlow also had a number of decent chances. Harlow lost the Division One (North) play-off final last season and it looks, although early days yet, with the team manager Danny Chapman has put together they will be right up the top end of the division for the 2014/15 campaign.

The game finished with some menacing looking clouds, lighting and thunder in the sky as the forecast storm moved across the Essex area which made for some good photographs to be taken. Alex Read's goal is below and the 'Harlow Town/Enfield Town' song in the second half!

NON LEAGUE DAY 2014 - PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CLUB

Here is an early head's up for Non League Day 2014 which is scheduled for Saturday 6th September 2014 when Enfield Town entertain Maidstone United at The Queen Elizabeth II Stadium. It should be a great occasion as The Enfield Town Ultras and travelling supporters  will be sure to make it a great atmosphere inside the ground.

Every day is a non-league day at The Cold End but if you are a supporter of a local Premier League team why not give non-league a try. There are many advantages - It's value for money, your not hemmed into one particular tiny plastic seat, you can stand and watch the game, you can have a decent pint and mingle with the players after the final whistle.

RISE OF THE SPARTANS - A HISTORY OF ENFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB

The Cold End recommends the short film below "Rise of the Spartans" which tells the story of football in Enfield from 1893 to the present day. Congratulations to presenter Graham Frost who also wrote the film which is fantastic. It is produced by the "Enfield Football Tales project" whose excellent website can be here. The film for me brought back some truly amazing memories of watching The E's in the 1990s at Southbury Road which I and many of the Enfield Town fans still miss to this day. The images of the old ground still give me goosebumps thinking of standing on The Town End.

The Premier Division has lost Bush Hill Rangers who have been promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Division One. Division One has lost Bushey Rangers, Codicote Sports, Harvesters and Welwyn Garden City Reserves so is only running with ten clubs for the 2014/15 season.  New teams are the reserves of Colney Heath and Hampstead Heath. I have no knowledge of the Hampstead club at present but it's good to see a new name joining the league!
