BELARUSIAN FOOTBALL ROUND-UP - SHAKHTYOR LEADING THE WAY IN THE PREMIER

Firstly, I apologise for the lack of updates on the wonderful world of Belarusian Football of late - With work and family stuff I just haven't had the time to keep up with regular articles.

PREMIER DIVISION
Shakhtyor Soligorsk lead the way in the Premier Division with eight wins from eight games, twenty one goals scored and only four conceded. Their 1-0 win at the weekend against rival's BATE Borisov saw them go seven points clear of their opponents and Dynamo Minsk who both currently have seventeen points. Some eyebrows were raised when Shakhtyor paid 700,000 euros for 22 year old Gambian striker Dembo Darboe over the winter break - He has certainly repaid the club's faith in his talents with nine goals in eight league games so far. He scored the winner in the BATE game which was a wonder strike from outside of the penalty box.

There was also a very strange occurrence at the weekend as Vitebsk actually scored a goal - in fact three of them in their highly entertaining 3-3 draw at FC Minsk. Five of their opening seven league games had ended 0-0 - hopefully now for their loyal fans they will go on hitting the back of the net. They were 3-2 down going into injury time only for Brazilian player Julio Cesar to equalise in the 94th minute.

As many people predicted Sputnik Rechitsa and Smorgon currently occupy the bottom two places of the table with just one win each.
