TALKING TO JIM WAGNER - MILL END SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Hertfordshire will have a new team for the 2019/20 season - Mill End Sports FC will play at the Mill End Sports and Social Club in Rickmansworth. Here we speak to Jim Wagner who will be the manager of the team to find out his plans for the team.

WHATS YOUR FOOTBALLING HISTORY?
I am/was basically a one club man playing for Oxhey Jets from when I was seven years old up until I finished playing when I was in my 30s.  I love that club! I then went into management with the Oxhey Jets reserve team and won consecutive league titles and a league cup. I then took the on the role of Assistant Manager with the first team where my mate Benny Higham was the manager back then. I’m proud to say that we took them through promotions to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division where they still are. Winning the first division title at the expense of Biggleswade United was a high point. Apart from the promotions we beat a strong Barnet side and St Albans City (twice) in the Herts Senior Cup. Also being part of the best FA Cup run the club has had up until now, when we reached the second qualifying round, played AFC Wimbledon away, and got beat 3-0 but acquitted ourselves extremely well under the circumstances.

WHATS YOUR AIM FOR MILL END SPORTS?
The aim I suppose has got to be to guide my youngsters in their transition from youth football to the senior game. Most of our squad are only seventeen years old so the aim is to really just to bed them in to the ranks of men’s football. If we finish top half, I’ll be more than happy.

WHAT CAN THE FA DO TO HELP GRASS ROOTS FOOTBALL?
The FA could help a lot of clubs by more money filtering down throughout the  grass roots level. I know they try hard, but setting up this team, even with our fantastic sponsors, the ACCUROCARE (www.accurocare.co.ukgroup, is very very expensive for all concerned (mainly me!! lol).

WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT FOOTBALL AT THIS LEVEL?
It gives an opportunity for players who can’t play any higher, to play the game, I believe that anyone who wants to play this great game of ours should have the opportunity to play at whatever level they can.

WHAT'S THE WORST THING ABOUT FOOTBALL AT THIS LEVEL?
Can I answer that question next May?

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO RUN THE TEAM THIS FORTHCOMING SEASON?
Because this season we’re completely starting from scratch, only having one team, with the pitch fees, the two kits, referees fees (at step nine you provide your own assistant referees) and all of the training equipment there won’t be much change from around £3,000!

WHAT TEAM ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING?
I have to say that I’m most looking forward to playing Oxhey Jets Vets. I believe they’re going to placed in our league. Most of their team are my old first team that I had most success with.
