CODICOTE SIGN OFF THE YEAR WITH A 4-1 VICTORY

Codicote ended the 2010's with an impressive 4-1 home win over Mursley United in the Spartan South Midlands League Division Two on Saturday. It was a highly memorable game for sixteen year old Jack Hewitt (pictured below) who was making his first start for The Cod - He set up the first goal for Max Evans in the first half only for Mursley to equalise and make the half time score 1-1.

There was a contentious incident in the first half when Codicote's keeper was booked for a challenge on the edge of the box which a Cod fan shouted was a 50/50 ball when the yellow card was shown. The incident has been viewed over 3,000 times on social media and discussed by many people. Local non-league celebrity Liam Kenna has stated "Horrendous, 3 game ban and 100 hours community service" with other comments as follows -

"Anywhere else on the pitch that's a yellow for me. But as the striker is through on goal (he's the right side of the defender at least) it could have been a red."

"It's a clear yellow card for a reckless challenge. Not Serious Foul Play for me so only way it might be red would be DOGSO. I'd lean towards this outcome though direction of play was not clearly towards the goal ..."

"For me, a DoGSO so the card should be as seasonally red as the nose on Rudolph imo! However, I was a part-time goalie once so good luck to him."

"Its an orange! Definitely a yellow, keeper should feel that he's lucky to stay on. #football"

"Great commitment, ball or man can get past never both. Defender was covering. Unlucky to get a yellow. If Striker was as committed he would've scored.

Mursley's goal was slightly controversial as the Codicote bench claimed the ball had gone out of play and rebounded from the metal stanchion on the side of the ball was smashed into the top of the net from close range.

The second half saw Hewitt score his three goals - Perry Price (who played four games for New Salamis last season and has also played for Harefield United) set two of them up with some good wing play on the left hand side of midfield. Former Wodson Park striker also made his debut for Codicote in this game.

The Cod continue their run of four home games in a row with fixtures against Bovingdon and Berkhamsted Raiders in the next two weeks.

Mursley (who have three wins from nine league games so far) host Berkhamsted Raiders on Saturday 4th January before another home game against New Bradwell St Peter on Saturday 18th January.

Colney Heath are currently in top spot of the SSMFL Premier Division and with game(s) in hand over their title rivals they are considered favourites for the title but will be taking it one game at a time with their next scheduled game on Saturday at home to local rival's London Colney who are currently second from bottom in the table with just thee wins in their nineteen games played. Colney Heath then go to Harpenden Town in the New Year which is a really exciting game in prospect.

Tring Athletic's recent defeat to Leighton Town (the in-form team in the division), Harpenden Town and Baldock Town have put a slight dent in the title credentials but they are the best placed team to challenge Colney Heath with just a point separating the two teams.

Leighton Town with five wins and one draw in their last six games are, as stated, the form side of the division - they are closely followed by Edgware Town who have five wins and one defeat in their last six. Edgware's performances have improved reamarkably - they let in 38 goals in their first 14 games (equating to 2.71 goals per games) which has improved to 6 in their last 6 (1 goal per game).

Leighton Town have also shown an amazing up-turn in form with just 10 points from their first 11 games (0.91 per game) and now 16 from their last 6 which equates to 2.67 PPG.

Folkestone Invicta are sitting at the top of the BetVictor Premier Division but only just by goal difference to in form Worthing. The Kent side have only won two of their last six games (against Enfield Town and Horsham) with Worthing on an unbeaten run of eleven league games - they lost to Folkstone Invicta and Hornchurch in two of their opening three league games and have since picked up eleven wins, five draws and just one defeat (to East Thurrock United) in seventeen games.

Of the current top eleven Enfield Town are the side most out of form with just five points picked up from a possible eighteen in their last six league games. Only Brightlingsea Regent (20th), Cheshunt (19th) and Wingate and Finchley (21st) have picked up a lower points total in their last six games.

The game of the day on Boxing Day is no doubt Worthing v Horsham where a win for either could put them top of the table subject to Folkestone Invicta's result at home to Margate.

WHO'S TOP AT CHRISTMAS IN THE TOP TWO STEPS OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL?

VANARAMA NATIONAL DIVISION
POSITION TEAM P GD PTS FORM
1 BARROW 24 +19 47 WWWDWW
2 YEOVIL TOWN 26 +13 45 DDDWWD
3 BROMLEY 26 +11 45 DWLDWL

Barrow AFC, without a defeat in seven league games, currently lead the way at non-league's top table at Christmas and there are not many fans who would of predicted this prior to the season kicking off. The Cumbrian side were rated at 28/1 (with skybet.com) for the title in July but are now 6/4 favourites closely followed by Solihull Moors (last season's runner's up) at 11/4. Yeovil Town are 13/2 and Bromley are 5/1.  With just seven points separating the current top seven of the division it really could be any team who finishes top at the business end of the season!

Barrow host AFC Fylde on Boxing Day with Yeovil Town also at home to Torquay United. Bromley travel to Dover Athletic.

VANARAMA SOUTH DIVISION
POSITION TEAM P GD PTS FORM
1 WEALDSTONE 19 +21 44 WDLWDW
2 SLOUGH TOWN 19 +13 37 LWWWDW
3 HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE 18 +19 36 LWWWWD

There is likely to be a huge crowd at Slough Town's Arbour Park on Boxing Day as Wealdstone visit for an eagerly anticipated top of the table clash. An away win would put The Stones ten points ahead of The Rebels. Havant & Waterlooville host sixth placed Weymouth in another all important game at the top end of the division.

VANRAMA NORTH DIVISION
POSITION TEAM P GD PTS FORM
1 KINGS LYNN TOWN 20 +17 44 WWWWWW
2 YORK CITY 21 +18 41 DLWDDL
3 SOUTHPORT 21 +13 37 WLLWWW

Kings Lynn Town, who were promoted from step three after beating Warrington Town in the super play-off final last season, currently sit proudly at the top of the Vanarama North Division. The club were formed in 2010 when the old Kings Lynn FC folded and started at step five in the United Counties League. Could The Linnets get a fourth promotion since 2011/12 when they finished second to Long Buckby in the UCL Premier.

York City were going well but just one win in their last six league games has put a dent in their hopes - they still have a fantastic chance of promotion back to the National Division with just two league defeats to date. Kings Lynn Town are on a run of eight games without a defeat (DDWWWWWW) with their last loss at York City (3-0 on Saturday 28th September).

Spennymoor Town, currently in sixth place, are the form side of the division without a defeat in thirteen league games (DWDWWWWDWWDDW).

Kings Lynn Town host Boston United (8th) on Boxing Day with York City on the road to Bradford Park Avenue (22nd bottom of the table) and Southport hosting Chester (5th).

Looking across all three divisions I'm sure nobody, prior to the season kicking off, would of predicted that Barrow AFC, Wealdstone and Kings Lynn Town would be top of their tables going into the important games on Boxing Day!

A NICE FESTIVE PRESENT FOR BARTON ROVERS - FIVE GOALS AND THREE POINTS

THE PLAYING SURFACE AT SHARPENHOE ROAD WAS PLAYABLE UNLIKE MANY PITCHES LOCALLY WHICH WAS CREDIT TO THE STAFF AT THE CLUB

Christmas came early for Barton Rovers yesterday as they recorded an impressive 5-1 victory over Kidlington at Sharpenhoe Road. It was 12th v 15th in The BetVictor Southern League Division One (Central) - going into the game the home side had six wins in fifteen league games - they had done something Erith Town, Bridon Ropes, Chalfont St Peter, Hartley Wintney, Enfield Town, Bowers & Pitsea and Three Bridges hadn't been able to achieve this season in beating Chichester City in a cup competition. They had recorded a 4-2 victory over the West Sussex side in the FA Trophy Preliminary Round in October.

Kidlington had league playing record in six wins in sixteen games played with just one victory away from home in seven games played which came against Coleshill Town in November. The Oxfordshire side were Hellenic Premier title winners in 2016 and moved up to Step Four of the non-league ladder have since finished 12th (Division One Central), 12th (Division One West) and 18th in Division One Central last season where they missed out on relegation by three points to Aylesbury FC and Dunstable Town.

ERIC ODHIAMBO WHO PLAYED FOR INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE FROM JANUARY 2009 TO JUNE 2011 - HE SCORED 10 GOALS IN 63 GAMES FOR THE SCOTTISH CLUB

The visitors included brother's Eric and Anaclet Odhiambo in their starting XI. Eric, 30, came through the ranks of Oxford United and Leicester City where he signed as a professional between 2006 to 2009 without breaking into the first team but did make league appearances for Dundee United and Southend United in loan spells. He then played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Denizilispor, Hereford United, Sligo Rovers and Brackley Town before joining Kidlington in 2015.

Anaclet, 37 years of age, counts Abingdon United, Abingdon Town, Didcot Town and Marlow as former clubs. There is also a third sibling in Eddie Odhiambo, 34, who started with Southampton and has played for a number of clubs including Stevenage Borough, Oxford United and Brackley Town during his career.

Kidlington took the lead in the 31st minute when some good interchange play between Anclet and Eric saw Anaclet to score from close range. Barton quickley equalised when Nathan Tshikuma's (on loan from AFC Rushden & Diamonds) low shot from around 25 yards out crept into the corner of the net.

Rovers took the lead early in the second half via Dean Dummett and he followed this up with a third goal for his team on 50 minutes. Dummett is one of a number of former Bedford Town players in the squad at Sharpenhoe Road.
Kidlington had chances to score with Niall Cooper in the Barton goal making a decent close range stop the stand out incident. It was only Cooper's second start for Rovers after recently joining from AFC Rushden & Diamonds - The 28 year old goalkeeper has formerly played for Redditch United, Leamington, Rugby Town, Stratford Town and Bedford Town. He had made two appearances for The Diamonds this season against Tamworth in the Southern League Premier Central and Corby Town in the Southern League Challenge Cup.

Late on in the game Charlie Smith's looping free kick from outside of the box went straight into the net - only he can tell you if he meant it or not and then Dummett scored another to complete his hat-trick with a header from close range.

The crowd was a decent figure of 181 and the result sees Barton go just six points off of Aylesbury United in fifth place (the final play-off place) so a decent run of results could see an exciting second half of the season for them.
Rover's manager Tony Fontelle will be very pleased with his team's performance going into the local derby Boxing Day game at Welwyn Garden City who are 4th in the table.

Kidlington host Wantage Town on Boxing Day. They are rooted to the bottom of the table with seventeen defeats in as many games with just six goals scored and eighty-one conceded.

They got to the quarter-final in 2012/13.

EPSOM & EWELL ANNOUNCE NEW GROUND SHARING AGREEMENT

Epsom and Ewell Football Club sadly left their West Street ground way back in 1993 and have lead a nomadic existence since ground sharing at Banstead Athletic until 2010 when they moved to Merstham and then onto Chipstead FC in 2012. They have today announced a ground sharing agreement with Leatherhead FC's Fetcham Grove home from the beginning of next season. It's now nearly 30 years since they played football in their home town.

The Salts stayed in the Isthmian League until 2006 when they were transferred to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. At the end of the 2017/18 season they were relegated to Division One where they finished in 8th place last season.

They are currently 17th of 20 teams in Division One.

THE EAGLES LOOK FAVOURITES FOR A SECOND LEAGUE TITLE IN A ROW

POS TEAM P GD PTS PPG FORM
1 SANDRIDGE ROVERS  15 +12 29 1.93 LWDDWW
2 LETCHWORTH GARDEN CITY EAGLES  10 +21 28 2.50 WWWWW

Everyone involved with The Eagles will certainly be taking each game as it comes but looking at the Hertfordshire Senior County League Premier Division table they have a really good chance of winning the title for a second season in a row. They have won nine and drawn one of their ten league games played so far with their only dropped points coming in their opening game against Cockfosters Reserves.

The club were denied promotion to step six last season due to the Football Association rating that their Pixmore home didn't meet the criteria required to move upwards. Work was started and was due to be completed by the end of May but this was not considered by the FA despite the league recommending that the club, formed in 1979, was given some time.

Their nearest challengers are Sandridge Rovers who have dropped points recently in draws against Royston Town Reserves and Ware Sports along with most crucially a defeat to Letchworth Garden City Eagles.

Former Welwyn Garden City striker Ashley Kersey has scored 13 goals for The Eagles so far this season. Harry Seeby (9) and former Hatfield Town manager Jason Beck (8) are top scorers for Rovers. Beck was Hatfield's manager last season when he signed Kersey who made a handful of appearances for the then SSMFL Division One side.

Sandridge Rovers visit Hatfield Town on Saturday with The Eagles visiting New River Athletic.
