WINGATE AND FINCHLEY TAKE THREE VALUABLE POINTS

Wingate and Finchley 2 Waltham Forest 0
Ryman Division One (North)

The weather cancelling Town's big day out today gave the cold end a chance to check out one of our rivals for a play off place in Wingate and Finchley, who since loosing 0-4 at home to Northwood in their last game of 2009 have been unbeaten in nine league games. Today, they faced Waltham Forest who themselves have been enjoying a few good results of late but where always going to find it hard going to Summers Lane as Dave Norman's team have one of the best home records in the division.

With many games cancelled due to waterlogged pitches it was surprising to see the surface at The Abraham's Stadium in such good condition. It's one of the best pitches I've seen this season so massive credit goes to the W&F ground-staff for keeping the field so nice in the atrocious weather we've been having.

Robert Carter heads towards goal

W&F ran out easy winners against a hard working Stag's side who played some nice football combined with long balls up to top scorer Danny Gabriel who showed some good touches in holding the ball up for his team mates. The home side passed the ball patiently with some neat build up play from the back with every player looking composed on the ball. Ahmet Rifat in the centre of midfield playing just in front of the back four stood out displaying some nice touches on the ball.

Pedro Kinght appeals before being booked by Referee Mr Russell

Leon Smith up front for the home side is a powerfully built centre forward who has a good turn of pace, He created the opening goal after about 30 minutes, for his strike partner Chris Chase. Smith ran down the right hand side of the field beating one Stag defender putting in a good cross for Chase to easily knock into the net past Sam Tanner in the away goal.

W&F were well on top in the first period with Rifat stinging the hands of Tanner with a shot from outside of the box along with Smith geting in some good positions but never seeming to get a clear cut chance.

Former Thamesmead Town midfielder Peter Smith had one shot on target for the Stags which was comfortably saved by Gavin King in the home goal.

It was 2-0 just prior to the break when Ryan Oliva slipped when with the ball inside the box allowing the confident Chase to bag a brace with a good shot past the unlucky Tanner.

HALF TIME 2-0

Ben Yiadom of Waltham Forest was the smallest player on the pitch but displayed how good he was in the air several times beating taller and bigger players to the ball. He looks a good player.

The second half was keenly contested but neither side created any really good opportunities with W&F happy to see the game out to gain a valuable three points.

Stag's captain Spencer Harrison who also had a good game rattled the home cross-bar with the away side's best chance of the game with a first-class header from a Danny Gabriel corner kick.

It had been really nice weather with the Sun trying to break through the clouds, that was up until the final ten minutes when the heaven's opened. The monsoon conditions prompted a mass dash for cover under the main stand with only a few hardcore fans staying out getting soaked.

FINAL SCORE - 2-0

W&F are now in fourth place in the table two points above Enfield Town but they have played two more games. They played some attractive football today and look a strong side so will be right up in the play-off mix come the end of April. In March they face Potters Bar Town, Maldon Town, Ilford, Brentwood Town and Waltham Forest in the return game before playing fellow play off hopefuls Thamesmead Town, Concord Rangers and Northwood. Town are a different side to the one which lost to W&F in November so will be a different proposition when we face them on the final day of the season. I see no reason why Town can't beat them!!

Starting line-ups

W&F -
Gavin King, Marc Weatherstone, Paul Wright, Ahmet Rifat, Daniel Nielsen, Craig Ellis, James Edgerley, Marc Henry, Leon Smith, Chris Chase, Gary Burrell.

WALTHAM FOREST -
Sam Tanner, Ryan Oliva, Ben Gracey, Ben Yiadom, Ian Walsh, Spencer Harrison, Andre Humphrey-Modeste, Peter Smith, Robert Carter, Danny Gabriel, Pedro Knight.

BLUE SQUARE PREMIER - THE RACE FOR PROMOTION

CHESTER CITY EXPELLED FROM THE BLUE SQUARE PREMIER

What looked to have been coming since the beginning of the season was confirmed today when Chester City were expelled from the Blue Square Premier. The club formed in 1885 now face a winding up order on the 10th March with a new supporters run club expected to be formed for the beginning of the new 10/11 season. The cold end sends good luck to the long suffering fans and hopes more exciting times lay ahead. The fallout from City's expulsion will be widely reported elsewhere so the cold end will concentrate on who the winners and loser's are as the table is adjusted with Chester City's record expunged???

Luton Town drew both their matches 0-0 so technically gain ground on their play-off rivals with Rushden and Diamond's dropping out of the play-off zone due to the three points they won with a 1-0 victory at the Deva Stadium on the 10th October being chalked off the record books. Their place is taken by Kettering Town, AFC Wimbledon fans will be pleased their 3-1 away defeat on the 31st October 2009 is now null and void. Mansfield Town seem to be the big losers as they were on 53 points but now drop down to 47 points as the two wins they had against the troubled club are now not to be counted.

All of Chester's fixtures will now of course be cancelled and not played with the home defeat by Ebbsfleet United on the 6th February 2010 being the club's last official game.

CURRENT ADJUSTED TABLE TOP 8 -

P W D L PT
1. OXFORD UNITED 30 20 6 4 66
------------------------------------------
2. STEVENAGE BOROUGH 30 17 9 4 60
3. YORK CITY 30 16 9 5 57
4. LUTON TOWN 29 16 6 7 54
5. KETTERING TOWN 31 16 6 9 54
------------------------------------------
6. AFC WIMBLEDON 30 15 8 7 53
7. RUSHDEN&DIAMONDS 30 15 7 8 52
8. MANSFIELD TOWN 30 14 5 11 47

The cold end's recommended tip on 31/07/2009 of Oxford United at 7/2 for the BSP title is looking like a good one although there is a lot of football to play yet. Second placed Stevenage Borough who I tipped at 6/4 to qualify for the play-offs are pushing the U's all the way in the race for automatic promotion to League Two with now only six points between the two.

With my other tip of 8/1 for James Constable to be the BSP top scorer it's looking like one of my tips may finally come in as the Oxford United striker is currently joint top-scorer on 20 goals alongside York City's Richard Brodie.

It's very close at the top of the table in the race for automatic promotion with York City in 3rd place and Luton Town in 4th the only realistic challengers to Oxford United and Stevenage Borough although the wheels will have to come off in a spectacular fashion for both the top 2 if The Minstermen or The Hatters are to overtake them. With the play-off chasing clubs due to play between 13 to 15 games there is still an awful lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season so any club can make a last minute dash for the end of season extravaganza at Wembley stadium with a shot at promotion to League Two.

KEY FORTHCOMING GAMES:

Rushden and Diamonds V Kettering Town - 27th February
Big Local derby six pointer.

Mansfield Town V Luton Town - 2nd March
David Holdsworth's team must win this game to stay in reach of the play-off zone.

Oxford United V Kettering Town - 13th March
Table toppers face a tough game against The Poppies

York City V AFC Wimbledon - 20th March
Two play off contenders sqaure off against each other at Bootham Crescent

Rushden and Diamonds V Oxford United - 24th March
Justin Edinburgh's men lost narrowly 1-0 at the Kassam Stadium on the 16th February so it'll be a tough trip for The U's.

Stevenage Borough V Oxford United - 30th March
The big clash of the titans at Broadhall Way that is bound to attract a massive crowd in Hertfordshire.

Stevenage Borough V Luton Town - 3rd April
Graham Westley's team face another tough home game, the second in the space of five days which will surely have a big say on their season. Another big attendance expected in the Beds/Herts local derby!!

LOWESTOFT TOWN - SOME FACTS

With Saturday's trip to the seaside getting closer here are some facts about Lowestoft Town:

* As the crow flies the distance from Goldsdown Road to Crown Meadow is around 94 miles and roughly 119 by road which makes Saturday's trip one of the longest Enfield Town have ever made. Our trip to Wroxham in the FA Vase 2nd Round on the 9th of November 2002 which is also 94 miles as the crow flies and roughly 116 by road is the other away game which could be argued was further away.
In third place is our trip to the Vic Couzens Stadium when we played out a 0-0 draw against Stamford AFC in the Southern League Division One (East) on the 19th November 2005, which is just over 70 miles away from Goldsdown Road in a straight line.
We also had visits to Rothwell Town and Corby Town in our season competing in the Southern League.

* Lowestoft Town were founder members of the Eastern Counties League in 1935 and were joint champions with Harwich and Parkeston in their first season.

* Up until their promotion last year, they and local rivals Great Yarmouth Town were the only two clubs with unbroken membership of the league since it's formation.

* The TrawlerBoy's glory years were most certainly in the 1960's when from 1962 to 1971 an incredible 7 league titles were won with only Great Yarmouth Town (68/69)and Bury Town (63/64) the other teams being crowned Champions. On both of these occasions Lowie were runner's up.

* The town of Lowestoft has another team which represents the area in 'Kirkley & Pakefield', they compete in the Eastern Counties Premier Division. The Royals as they are known were formed in 2006 when the clubs of 'Kirkley' and 'Pakefield' merged. Despite being in 4th position they have struggled to compete with the crowds that flock to Crown Meadow having a current average of 195. This figure is the highest in the division at present.

* The current highest crowd in the Eastern Counties League this season came in Division One when the Boxing Day local derby between Great Yarmouth Town and Gorleston attracted 440 people.

* Veteran Enfield FC fans will remember travelling to the the Suffolk coast to play Gorleston in FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round in 1978 when the E'S came away with a 6-2 victory. As far as I'm aware apart from the game at Goldsdown Road earlier in the season a club representing Enfield has never played against Lowestoft Town in a competitive fixture.

* The TrawlerBoys have only let in 12 goals in their 14 home league games this season. Their two defeats coming early in the season against Ilford and recently versus Ware. In their last two games at Crown Meadow they have let their excellent defensive record slip slightly letting in 3 goals in both matches.

* Lowestoft's average home league gate currently stands at an incredible 681. Last weekend's attendance of 857 against East Thurrock United was their top league crowd of the season so far. In the FA Cup, crowds of 1,134 (Boston United), 1,210 (Sutton Coldfield Town) and 2,247 (Gloucester City) were recorded at Crown Meadow. Let's hope that the 4 figure mark may be broken again on Saturday. Enfield Town have only ever played in front of a crowd over 1000+ on one occasion when 1,004 saw the 1-6 defeat at Dartford on the 1st December 2007.

ISTHMIAN PROGRAMMES OF THE PAST

Saturday 22nd October 1983
Woking V Feltham
'SERVOWARM' Isthmian League Division One

After spending the last seventies as a Premier Division club, Woking were relegated to Division One for the 1983/84 season and even worse was to come when the Kingfield club were relegated to Division Two (South) in the 84/85 campaign. Enfield FC fans all know what happened from the 90/91 season when Woking were promoted back to the Premier Division with their subsequent rise into the Conference along with national FA Cup fame. The peak of The Card's campaign in the conference was the 94/95 season when they finished second to Macclesfield Town and the following season when they were runners-up to Stevenage Borough, another club who as we know had rose rapidly from the depths of the Isthmian League.

The programme/matchday magazine is 12 pages and contains a good three pages on the visitor's pen-pictures and history. Feltham included goalkeeper John Loizides who was 19 at the time and had spent a season at Chelsea along with player's such as Razzo Denman, Roy Gadsby and Billy Collacott amongst others. The Woking side listed included Clive Holmes in goal and Tom Jones at number 7.

Back in October 1983 Woking had suffered a very poor start to their season winning only 3 of their 11 league games with the visitors one point above them in the league table after winning 4 of their 10 opening games. Division One at the time was at 'step 3' of the Pyramid and contained Cheshunt, Tilbury, Clapton, Oxford City and Metropolitan Police amongst others. The Lions of Wembley were top as of 22/10/83 having made a storming start winning 7 of 11 games. The Vale Farm club missed out on the glory of promotion by 4 points finishing in the third place at the end of the season. Then Fourth placed Epsom & Ewell finished in second place and then sixth placed Windsor & Eton were champions with both clubs promoted to the Premier Division.

Feltham despite their average start were only to win another 3 games all season and finished cut adrift at the bottom on the pile on 25 points, the next team above them was Cheshunt on 44 points. Woking finished in mid-table on 55 points in 13th place.

Both the Ambers and the blues were relegated to the newly formed Divison Two North and South respectively. The next season due to the reorganisation and introduction of two Divison Two leagues four clubs were relegated. Woking finished in 19th place on 51 points and suffered the dreaded drop. This total in 83/84 would of got them to 16th place and the comfort of safety.

Feltham stayed around in the Isthmian League lower reaches and in 1991 changed their name to 'Feltham and Hounslow Borough' following a merger with local side Hounslow who had dropped out of the Southern League in 1990 and played one season in the Hellinec Premier in 1990/91. The newly formed partnership played in the Isthmian Divison Three for a total of four season's finishing 16th, 20th, 14th and 18th when in 1995 following joining the Combined Counties League they dropped the '& Hounslow Borough' becoming just Feltham again.
Feltham did play at the Feltham Sports arena ground which was famous for it's plastic pitch but have spent the last few season's ground sharing with neighbour's Egham Town, Hampton and Richmond and now at The Orchard the home of Bedfont FC. Happily the London Borough of Hounslow have recently granted planning permission for the ground to be redeveloped and the club plan to move back soon. Hopefully, the club were Fulham legend Johnny Haynes spent time on loan as a youngster may return to a higher level of non-league football soon.

The Isthmian League Division One (as it stood in October 1983)

How many Woking fans in 1983 would of thought they would get so close to promotion to the league and gain national fame for their FA Cup exploits???? That season they were "giant-killed" themselves by Sussex County League side Hailsham Town 1-2 at Kingfield in the Preliminary round.

Feltham's best run in the FA Cup was in 1977 when they met Tilbury in the 3QR and lost 1-4, they reached this stage again in 1982 and lost out to Chesham United 1-0. This season is the first time since 1994 when then Feltham and Hounslow Borough lost at Dagenham and Redbridge 1-3, that Feltham have entered the world's most famous cup competition, falling at the first hurdle 4-1 away at East Grinstead Town.

Woking after relegation from the Blue Square Premier last season now play at 'step 2' in the Blue Square South division whilst Feltham play at 'step 6' in the Combined Counties League Division One.

WEATHER CONDITIONS BOUND TO DISRUPT MIDWEEK GAMES

1pm PITCH INSPECTION FOR TRAVELLING TRAWLER BOYS

Any Lowestoft Town fan that makes the trip to their Championship Manager Quarter Final tie at Ryman South Croydon Athletic tonight deserves a pat on the back. It's a 250+ round trip down from Suffolk and around the M25 which won't be the best of journey's as it's currently snowing in some parts of Suffolk, Essex and Ryman Country. There is a 1pm pitch inspection at Mayfield Road due to see if the surface in playable. Athletic are 2nd in the south division so it's a good game in prospect. They have won 10 of their 14 home league games with the defeats coming against Chatham Town (3-4), Walton & Hersham (2-4) and Whyteleafe (0-2).
They have beaten Corinthian Casuals (2-0 at home), Premier Division high flyers Hastings United (0-1 away) and Walton & Hersham (0-1 away) to get to this stage.
Lowie have beaten Ilford (3-1 at home), Maldon Town (0-3 away) and Tilbury (2-1 at home) in order to play this this quarter-final game.

The other quarter-finals are

Aveley V Canvey Island (to be played on 1st March),
Fleet Town V Leatherhead (scheduled for this Thursday)
Wealdstone V the winners of Billericay Town V Sittingbourne (which is due to be played on Thursday).

Other Midweek Ryman North fixtures

Monday
Northwood V Redbridge
Tuesday
East Thurrock United V Concord Rangers
Enfield Town V Brentwood
Harlow Town V Heybridge Swifts
Maldon Town V Great Wakering Rovers
Potters Bar Town V Ilford
VCD Athletic V Leyton
Ware V Cheshunt
Wednesday
Waltham Forest V Redbridge

bwin.com rate Enfield Town at 1/2 favourites with a draw at 14/5 and a Brentwood Town away win at 4/1. I think it'll be much closer than these odds suggest as The Blues have won their last three games versus East Thurrock United, Potters Bar Town and Harlow Town.

The game of Tuesday night takes place at Rookery Hill when The Rocks currently in sixth place take on now firmly in 2nd place Concord Rangers. A home win is rated at 6/5, the draw at 5/2 and an away win at 31/20. If East Thurrock United lose and Town win they'll be a five point gap between us with Town having a game in hand to make it a possible 8 points. A very interesting game for all the play-off chasing teams which I think will be a closely matched affair. Two local derby matches also take place when Ware take on Cheshunt and Waltham Forest entertain Redbridge.

Light snow is currently falling in some parts of the Ryman North country with some heavy rain forecast to fall later on today and tomorrow so the weather may take it's toll on some of the games due to be played.

RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE RYMAN NORTH SEASON SO FAR...

* Of the current top nine Wingate & Finchley have the worst goalscoring record away from home hitting the net only 16 times in 13 games. Only seven other clubs in the division have a worse scoring record on the road. W&F have only failed to score in three of these 13 games at Romford, Redbridge and East Thurrock United.

* Potters Bar Town seem to love playing away from home with only Concord Rangers and Lowestoft Town having a better record than them. The scholar's have only won once at a current top 9 side in their victory at Great Wakering Rovers. They have also won at Tilbury, Cheshunt, Romford, Ware, Leyton, Waltham Forest and Maldon Town. They are the complete opposite at home with their record at the South Mimms Travel Stadium reading - LWWWDLLLLLL. Harlow Town and Ware were beaten early in the season with their last win at home coming on the 19th September 2009 versus Waltham Forest. This Tuesday they have they have an excellent chance of ending their home hoodoo when they entertain struggling Ilford who have only scored 9 times on their travels. Ilford had their two unexpected victories early in the season at Lowestoft Town and Enfield Town along with victories at Harlow Town and Leyton in November. They haven't won at home or away since earning only 4 points out of the last 33 on offer.

* The Stags of Waltham Forest have the current worst average home attendance at 56. 3rd placed Thamesmead Town have struggled to pull in the punters at Bayliss Avenue despite their lofty position in the table averaging just 62. Town's average of 212 is somewhat disappointing. Going back to our play-off season of 06/07 our average was 291.

* Town are just 6 points off the total amount of points (58) the team totalled last season and 11 away from the 07/08 campaign (63)

PATIENT, IMPRESSIVE AND ASSURED TOWN PERFOMANCE SECURES VALUABLE HOME WIN

With Paul Marks suspended and Rudi Hall's suspension due to start next week the town management shuffled their pack for the starting line up. Andy Jones, made his first start since the 1st December against Wingate and Finchley in the league cup together with Jon Moore, who making his first league start for the Town made up the centre midfield pairing for the start of the match.

Stuart Blackburne also made his first start since returning from his injury with Adam Wallace dropping to the bench.

Moore and Jones played very well together with the former impressing with his energetic box to box play and in particular his late run into the box which created an excellent chance. Jones looked composed and worked very hard putting in number of well timed and excellent challenges on various Northwood players.

It was really a game of few chances with the Northwood front pairing of Leon Osei and Eugene Ofori (who always seems to score against Town) marked near enough out of the game by Town centre backs Craig McKay and Mark Kirby. Northwood, who came into the game having scored 13 goals in their last six games only created two significant chances in the whole 90 minutes as the town back four and Rob Blackburne chalked up their 2nd clean sheet in row.

Ex Enfield FC defender Bob Dowie talking to Northwood manager Dave Anderson in the away dugout.

It was all town in the first 10 minutes as Stuart Blackburne got a shot on target which all but looked a goal only for Harry Smart to clear the ball off the line at the last moment possible. Sam Byfield who had a great game on the left wing then had a good shot in on goal. Moments later Moore volleyed to ball past Bobby Smith in the Northwood goal after receiving a pass from Blackburne only for the post to save the away side from going 1-0 down.

The game slowed down for the rest of the half and it was all very quite in terms of goalmouth action until right before the end of the half when from a corner Leon Osei created one of Northwood's two chances in the game when his header on target was confidently tipped over the bar by Rob Blackburne.

HALF TIME 0-0

The break was spent chatting to other Town fans about the big trip to Lowestoft next weekend and the fact this game looked like so many we have seen before watching Enfield FC and Enfield Town where the away side get a lucky 0-1 win from a goal in the last moments of the match.

Luckily this wasn't to be as Town took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd half thanks to Stuart Blackburne playing in Moore again whose shot from just inside the box nestled in the left hand corner of the net past the diving Smith in the Northwood goal.

Stuart Blackburne was replaced by Adam Wallace who then made the 2nd and decisive goal when his cross in from the left hand side of the field was headed into his own net by the unlucky Michael Peacock. Wallace himself would of been proud of the header as Peacock was under no pressure from any attacking player.

Northwood created one more chance up front when Chris Seeby's header hit the cross bar late on.

In summary a pleasing performance from the Town against a side who I thought would be much tougher opponents especially going forward. A good three points towards the play-off dream!!

Man of the match goes to Jon Moore for his performance in the centre of midfield. The cold end has been told Moore is leaving England soon for South Africa which is a shame as he looks a very good player. Sam Byfield also worked very hard all day on the left hand side of midfield.

A better crowd today of 245, Lets hope we can push towards the 300+ mark towards the business end of the season.

Next up (weather permitting) - Brentwood Town at home on Tuesday night and then it's off to Lowestoft Town next weekend. The Trawler Boys in their last two home games have conceded a total of six goals which is encouraging. Joe Francis, who scored a hat-trick yesterday has scored 12 times in 9 league games since joining the league leaders. Concord Rangers are looking to make a fight of it though and are now only six points behind the leaders who visit Thames Road on the 2nd March. The six points can be turned in 7 though with the Trawler Boys colossal +58 goal difference and 12 (13 with the goal difference) if they win their 2 games in hand.

NICE WEATHER FOR DUCKS!!!! KINGS LANGLEY BEAT HODDESDON TOWN ON A VERY WET AND COLD LOWFIELD NIGHT

HODDESDON TOWN V KINGS LANGLEY
SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS DIVISION ONE

Only a handful of local games survived the horrible weather conditions tonight. Enfield Town's home game along with the rest of the Ryman North fixtures were all cancelled in the afternoon after North London and the surrounding counties suffered hours of torrential rain causing most pitches to be declared totally unplayable.

I was somewhat surprised when I heard Hoddesdon Town's home fixture at home to Kings Langley was scheduled to go ahead with the referee deeming the pitch okay to play on. Upon arrival at Lowfield looking at the surface I wasn't hopeful of seeing any football as it looking terrible.

The game kicked off late at about 8pm and apart from a few occasions when the ball got bogged down in the middle of the pitch it wasn't too bad. It wasn't the best of matches as you can see the conditions were conducive to excellent soccer but full marks to the players and officials for getting the game on and played. It tipped it down with rain for the whole match.

Kings Langley took an early lead through Lewis Toomey only the be pegged back by a Lee Tombs header making the half time score 1-1. Hoddesdon had the better chances of the half, they hit the post from a free kick and also went close one other occasion.

ABOVE TWO PICTURES SHOW OFFICIALS FROM HODDESDON TOWN WORKING HARD AGAINST THE ELEMENTS TO GET THE PITCH INTO A PLAYABLE CONDITION.

The second half was one of few chances with Toomey being the King's Langley hero when he knocked the ball into a open net following a high free kick into the area which struck the post. Hoddy had one good chance to get back into the game but Ross Channer in goal for Langley pulled off a good save.

Hoddesdon Town produce one of the best non-league programmes going and it was no different tonight when on sale was their mammouth 60 page effort for only £1.50. Excellent value!!
