The race for the title in the SSMFL Premier Division is shaping up to be a really exciting one with Biggleswade FC currently top of the table. They secured a very important home victory over local rival's Arlesey Town yesterday after being 0-1 down at half time with Town's Lorrell Smith netting for the visitors. Goals from Lee Northfield, Alex Marsh, Ryan Inskip and Justin Leavers in the second half secured a fine 4-1 win for the home side.

Tring Athletic have lost their last two games in a row against an in form Biggleswade United and a surprise result yesterday as Wembley, who have been struggling down the bottom of the table, won 0-2 at The Grass Roots Stadium.

Hadley who had been in excellent form of late winning an amazing ten league games in a row went down 0-1 to Colney Heath who are currently in seventh place in the league.

I saw Arlesey Town play Leverstock Green in mid-week in a game which they won 2-0 through goals from Alex O'Brien and and Lorrell Smith who I was very impressed with. He is a proper centre forward who holds the ball up well bringing in other players, has a real burst of pace and give him a chance in front of goal he'll hit the target more often than not. Alex Yearwood on the right hand side of midfield for Leverstock Green was their stand out player - He put in a number of dangerous crosses but the visitor's were unable to score. Yearwood has played for St Albans City and East Thurrock United previously as well as Daventry Town, Harpenden Town and Broadfields United.

For Arlesey's management team of Matt Endersby and James Hatch along with coaches Graeme Endersby, Keith West and Natasha Orchard-Smith to be in the top five of the table in tremendous achievement as when they joined the club in the summer there were no players after the club were relegated from the Southern League Division One East at the end of last season.

It's a HUGE two weeks for the current top two as next Saturday it's a Buildbase FA Vase Third Round game at The Grass Roots Stadium followed by a league game on Saturday 8th December at the Carlsberg Stadium. FC then face Hadley on Saturday 15th followed by the big Biggleswade Christmas derby on Saturday 22nd December when they make the short journey to play United - The corresponding game last season played on the Saturday before Christmas attracted a crowd of 235 - Hopefully this year that figure can be beaten especially with both sides having title aspirations.

Leighton Town and Leverstock Green are the only other sides left representing the league in the FA Vase.

Town got to the Quarter-Final stage last season and travel to The West Midlands next Saturday to face Lye Town of the Midland League Premier Division. The Flyers, as Lye Town are nick-named, are in mid table in their division and have a similar league record to Leighton who are also in mid table of the SSMFL Premier Division.

Leverstock Green have a tough trip to Histon on Sunday 2nd December. The Stutes, after four relegations in seven seasons, are currently top of the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Premier Division and have only lost two games in league and cup all season. The game is played close to the ten year anniversary of Histon's most famous day when they beat Leeds United (then of League One) in the FA Cup Second Round 1-0 at home on Sunday 30th November 2008 in front of a crowd of 4,800. Leeds side that day included Fabian Delph, Robert Snodgrass and Luchiano Becchio.

At the bottom of the table it's been a difficult season for Stotfold - they are still to win a league game with four draws and thirteen defeats in their seventeen games played so far. Their only victory came in the FA Vase when they beat Essex Senior League side Leyton Athletic 4-0 - they went on to lose to West Essex in the next round.

HOW ARE LAST SEASON'S PROMOTED SIDES DOING?

Two clubs were promoted from the SSMFL Premier Division last season. Champion's Welwyn Garden City and runner's up Berkhamsted  moved up to the Evo Stik Southern League Division One (Central) and both are doing very well with The Comrades currently in fourth position and The Citizens in seventh position which is brilliant to see.

Adam Fisher's side won 3-0 at home to North Leigh yesterday with Steve Bateman's side winning 0-1 at AFC Dunstable.
