RACE FOR THE TITLES IN THE TOP DIVISIONS OF LOCAL AMATEUR FOOTBALL

There are three main Amateur football leagues in the London and Home Counties area being the Southern Amateur League, The Amateur Football Combination and The Arthurian League. The true spirit of the game is alive and well with the leagues remaining true to the old Amateur traditions of fair play and respect for opponents and match officials. The SAL runs nineteen divisions, The AFC runs twenty-six with the AL having eight divisions. Here we look at the race for the title in the three top divisions of each league.

The historic Old Carthusians have dominated the league's top division for the last decade and have another chance of winning the again this season. They have won the league title and Arthur Dunn Cup double in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014. The club are world famous for being the only team to win the FA Cup (in 1881) and the FA Amateur Cup (in 1894 and 1897). Old Foresters and Lancing Old Boys still have a massive outside chance of finishing top but only if Old Carthusians lose both of their remaining games. As it stands a victory for current table topper's at Old Harrovians on Saturday would seal the title for them - This looks highly likely as OH are bottom of the table and lost their away game at OC 10-1 in January.

Carthusians will get a chance of winning the league and cup double once more as they face Lancing in the final of the Arthur Dunn Cup on Saturday 18th April at The Heston Sports Ground. The cup is named in honor of Arthur Dunn who played for Old Etonians in The FA Cup finals of 1892 and 1893 and also represented England five times between 1883 and 1892 whom he captained in his last game versus Scotland. With the advent of professionalism the old boy sides were edged out of The FA Cup and he was a pioneer in forming an Old Boy's Association and cup competition along with his friend Norman Malcolmson. Dunn died in 1902 with the first final of The Arthur Dunn Cup taking place in 1903 between Old Carthusians and Old Salopians at Crystal Palace.

Old Garchonians are currently top of The Southern Amateur League Senior Division One but have completed their season playing twenty games. For them to stay top both Winchmore Hill and Old Wilsonians would have to lose all their reaming games which is unlikely so the race for the title looks to be between the current 2nd and 3rd placed teams.  It's going to be a busy month for Old Wilsonians who play the Amateur Football Alliance Senior Cup final on Saturday 11th April against Old Meadonians and also the Surrey FA Premier Cup Final on Wednesday 8th April against Metropolitan Police Reserves. If they win their remaining four league games they will win the league on 45 points.

There is still alot of football to be played in the Amateur Football Combination Premier Division and it's looking like it will be an exciting end to the season with four teams in with a shout of the title. Old Meadonians (who, as stated above, play in the AFA Senior Cup Final next weekend), Old Hamptonians, Honorable Artillery Company and Old Suttonians all have a chance of finishing in top spot. Old Suttonians have seven games left of which they play Old Meandonians twice and Old Hamptonians twice so it's definately all to play for.
