GREEN = ODDS HAVE SHORTENED
RED   = ODDS HAVE LENGTHENED

Not much change at the bottom of the betting with only AFC Telford United going out from 40/1 to 50/1. The Towns of Luton and Fleetwood are still favourites despite their odds lengthening but only by a very small amount. There is then a gap to third favourite's York City who are now 7/1 from 9/1.

There is no surprise in the big change being Stockport County going in from 28/1 into 12/1 for the title. Since the 26th June the club has been subject of a take-over and ex Liverpool and Manchester City player Dietmar Hamann has taken over as boss bringing in a number of impressive signings. The question some people will ask is will Hamann's new look side gel in time to make a good start to their league campaign??

They make their Blue Square Premier debut on Friday 12th August in an away trip to Forest Green Rovers.

ALL SQUARE AT CHALK LANE

An Enfield Town XI managed by reserve boss Ram Ismail played Cockfosters of the Spartan South Midlands League Division One at Chalk Lane this afternoon. On a nice warm day with the sunshine blazing the game finished 1-1 with Cockfosters scoring after 12 minutes and Town's goal coming after around 40 minutes through Aaron Cato who if luck was going his way could of easily scored a hat-trick during his time on the pitch. Recognisable names appearing for Town fans were Richard Morton, Cato, Daniel Jones and Izci Eren.

In the second half both sides had chances to win the game with both goalkeeper's performing well making a number of good stops. Cato had a chance well saved by the Cockfoster's keeper when clean through on goal and substitute Daniel Ailey (who scored a hat-trick in one half on Thursday night against Goffs Oak) rattling the cross-bar with his first touch. Ailey spent last season with Haringey Borough and also plays for the Great British Deaf Football Team. He looks a good player and certainly knows where the goal is.

Photos from the game and Chalk Lane are below -

Some took advantage of the gap in the fence to watch the cricket game going on next door during a break in play

With the tackles flying in, especially in the first half. the game did threaten to boil over at one point

The above two photos hopefully have a 'retro feel' to them as they were taken with the 'retro' setting in place on the cold end camera.

One of the chances Cato missed which was well saved by the Cockfoster's keeper
Daniel Ailey, who rattled the cross bar with his first touch and also had another good effort saved

COCKFOSTERS OR DAVENTRY TOWN??

For Enfield Town supporters there is a choice of games on offer tomorrow with the first team travelling to Northamptonshire to play Zamaretto Division One (Central) side Daventry Town and a reserve/youth XI making the shorter trip to Chalk Lane to play Spartan South Midlands Division One side Cockfosters.

Former Republic of Ireland international, Charlton Athletic, Colchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Walsall player Mark Kinsella has taken over as Manager of Daventry Town this summer. They just missed out on a second succesive promotion last season after losing to Hitchin Town in the play-off final so will be a tough test for Steve Newing's side. They have had a mixed bag of results so far this pre-season beating Banbury United (0-2) and Hoddesdon Town (14 (yes FOURTEEN)-0), drawing with Ardley (1-1) and in their latest match losing to S&L Corby (1-5) on Tuesday night. The Hoddesdon result can be explained by stating Hoddy had a mixture of under 18's and reserves fielded.

Cockfosters have played two pre-season games to date narrowly losing to Wingate and Finchley (1-2) and Haringey and beating Boreham Wood Reserves (5-1) where Anton Lewis scored a hat-trick.

If you are planning on travelling to Chalk Lane the cold end advice is to leave a little bit of time to find a parking space as the car-park is very small. With the tube station close-by all the surrounding roads are controlled parking but if you drive a short distance (about 5 min walk to ground) you'll be able to find some free parking I beleive to save you the pennies and pounds from parking in the tube station car park.

The Essex Senior League season starts in just over a week on Saturday 6th August with the following fixtures for August announced shown below. In the first lot of midweek fixtures there are two local derbies to look forward to with 'The Airport Derby' between Takeley and Stansted at Station Road on Tuesday night and 'The Battle of Basildon' on Wednesday night at The Len Salmon Stadium.

Another derby takes place at The Spotted Dog Ground on Tuesday 16th August when Clapton face London APSA.

RYMAN DIVISION ONE (NORTH) FRIENDLY UPDATES

It's all too early to read anything into team's results with many manager's fielding trialists and usually making a raft of substitutions in the pre-season friendly games but it's always good to see what teams are doing what?. Here is an update on the games played so far by the Ryman Division One (North) sides -

AFC SUDBURY

12/7 - Long Melford W 2-0
16/7 - Witham Town W 1-0

AFC Sudbury travelled to Fakenham Town last Saturday and drew 1-1 against 'The Ghosts' as the North Norfolk side are known. Ryan Henshaw equalised for AFC in the second half after Fakenham had gone in 1-0 at the break. Goalkeeper Danny Gay who has signed this summer for AFC from Needham Market had an eventful game as he came off for a well earned break on 60 minutes but ended up between the sticks for the home side in the last 20 minutes. The Ghosts home keeper sustained a leg injury with Gay taking over and denying his teams mates from scoring the winner.

The addition of midfielder Dan Trenkel will only bolster the Essex side's chances this season. They have opened with an 8-1 defeat of ESL side Takeley. Fielding two different XI's in the match Trenkel, Dean Green (2), Emmanuel Osei, Joe Gardener, Ryan Edgar (2) and Sos Yao scored the goals. Last Saturday they travelled to another ESL side in Barking and came back from 2-0 down to finish 2-2 with Yao and Darren Blewitt on the scoresheet. 13/8 - HARROW BOROUGH

Manager Stuart Nethercott's new look Ware side got their first win on Tuesday night against Hadley thanks to a Marcus Sammons goal. The Ware side was contained a number of fringe players and trialists against the Spartan South Midlands side. Ware entertain the first "Northern" side ever to be accepted into the Hertfordshire Charity Cup when Blue Square North side Bishops Stortford make what will be a rare short trip for them to Wodson Park tomorrow. The game will pit former Totthenham Hotspur team-mates Nethercott and Ian Walker against each other in opposing dug-outs.

HERTFORD TOWN 0 ENFIELD TOWN 2

The pitch at Hertingfordbury Park against Waltham Abbey on the 24th July 2010

What a difference a year makes!!!
Enfield Town travelled to take on Spartan South Midlands Premier Division Hertford Town on Tuesday night in a pre-season friendly. The first thing that struck the cold end was the suface at Hertingfordbury Park was in very good condition. I visited near enough a year to the day when Waltham Abbey were their opponents and as the picutres above show the pitch has improved no end.

Some views of Hertingfordbury Park on Tuesday night
Town included Jey Siva, Stuart Blackburne and Joe Stevens in their line up with Siva and Stevens linking up well on the left hand side during the first half. Both teams played some good passing football but it was Enfield Town who recorded a 0-2 win thanks to a brace (one a penalty) from Jamie O'Donohuge. Aaron Cato came on for Stevens and as always showed some nice skill when on the ball.

DRAWS MADE FOR THE MIDDLESEX SENIOR AND CHARITY CUPS

The draw has been made for the Middlesex FA Senior and Charity Cups for the 2011/12 season.

In the First Round of the Senior Cup Enfield Town have been drawn at home to Spartan South Midlands League side Harefield United. If Town get through we face the winners of the Ashford Town (Middx) v Wealdstone game. From the Quarter Finals onwards it all gets a bit complicated but if Steve Newing's side do win through we could potentially play Enfield 1893 at home if they win through against AFC Hayes in the Second Round.

In the Charity Cup Town travel to North Greenford United in the Second Round with the winners of that tie ironically through to face either Wealdstone or Ashford Town (Middx).

Wealdstone are the current holders of the Charity Cup having beaten Hanworth Villa in the final with Staines Town holders of the Senior Cup having beaten Hayes and Yeading 3-2 in the 2011 final.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO 'THE COLD END'

The Cold End was born two years ago today on Friday 24th July 2009. The blog opened with three articles, one previewing Enfield Town's pre-season friendly with Wealdstone at Goldsdown Road which was Steve Newing and Del Deanus's managerial debut for the club. The three new clubs for the Ryman Division One (North) 2009/10 season in VCD Athletic, Lowestoft Town and Romford were welcomed to the league along with the cold end's first tip - 'TIP FOR TOP SCORER IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP' showed that the cold end started as an awful tipper and still continues to be a really bad gambler. Ched Evans of Sheffield United at odds of 20/1 was tipped as 'worth a punt in my opinion' - He went on to make 34 appearances for The Blades and scored only four times that season! Top scorer in the Championship that season was Peter Whittingham of Cardiff City who hit the back of the net 22 times.

TWO YEARS OLD TODAY

It shows that two years is a long time in football as VCD Athletic now play in the Kent League at Step 5 and Lowestoft Town now play in the Ryman Premier League at Step 3. Ched Evans is still playing football in the Steel City with United and is 16/1 with skybet.com to be top scorer in the N-POWER LEAGUE ONE for the forthcoming season. Perhaps this year will be the Welsh player's year!

The Cold End will continue bringing highlights, news, pictures and other stuff from the local non-league football scene during the 2011/12 season when Enfield Town move into the new Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Thank you for all your continued support and comments over the past two years.

THE CITIZENS CONTINUE PRE SEASON BUILD UP

Welwyn Garden City FC played a pre-season game this afternoon when they faced a Barton Rovers side on the 3G pitch at Valley Sports Academy in Stevenage. The cold end only saw the first half of the game but can report that despite going in 0-1 down at the break The Citizens played some good football. The game finished 3-1 to Barton Rovers. Here are some photos of the game -
